This was the fifth straight year in which the Varsity squad participated in the largest high school girls basketball tournament in the nation, with 200 teams competing from across the country. Unlike club tournaments, each team must be comprised of students from the same high school. The tournament ran from July 18-21, 2013, at three different locations in San Diego.
The Lady Eagles were placed in Pool I, with their first game of the tournament on Thursday evening, playing at Alliant International University against Yosemite HS. El Segundo won, 35-23, with Myia Mosley leading the scoring with 14 points, and Quinn Adams adding 10.
On their first game on Friday, the Lady Eagles came back from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Poway HS, 33-30. Kayla Kigawa & Paige Endo each score 9 points, including three free throws in the final 2 minutes by Paige to tie the game. Morgan Gee hit a midrange baseline jumper to put the Lady Eagles up by 2, and Kayla added another free throw for the final margin.
The win against Poway put the Lady Eagles in the championship game of Pool I against top-seeded Winslow, the 9th ranked team in the state of Arizona last season. Both teams started off slowly, with Myia Mosley sitting out much of the game with a sore ankle. Winslow pulled away in the second half, winning 33-23. Kayla Kigawa was the leading scorer with 8 points.
In the first game of Pool 2, the Lady Eagles went against Tesoro HS (Rancho Margarita), where they lost, 30-40. Myia Mosley had 9 points and Paige Endo added 7.
In their second game of Pool 2, El Segundo was defeated, 27-53, by a very talented Torrey Pines HS.
In their final game of the tournament, the Lady Eagles beat St. Mary’s (Stockton), 43-35. Myia Mosley scored 23 points and El Segundo finished the tournament, 3-3, going against some very tough teams in Pool 2, which consisted of all of the second place finishers from the opening pools.
